Overview

The City of Mangaung will offer visitors and residents safe and easily accessible public transport during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. Bus and other existing services will cater for a wide variety of transport requirements, and will ensure that the Free State Stadium, the FIFA Fan Fest™ and the public viewing areas (PVAs) are adequately served.

Event-related public transport will be added to the regular public transport system i.e. the airport to stadium shuttle that will run from the Bloemfontein International Airport to the Free State Stadium via the rail station and Park and Ride services. Manguang’s inner city will be served by an inner city transport service.

Airport-Stadium Shuttle Service

An airport to stadium service will run from the airport, via the Railway Station and major accommodation nodes e.g. hotels and school hostels to the stadium.

Inner City Transport Service

A dedicated inner city shuttle service is planned to be introduced and this route will include a total of 16 stops within the CBD and will be linked to the airport – stadium service and major accommodation and shopping nodes. A valid match-ticket will allow the user access to the shuttle service, without any additional charges.

Park n Ride Services

Shuttle services will be provided from the following Park & Ride sites to the Stadium:

• The Baptist Church located to the north west of the N1/Zastron interchange with access from Van Blerk Avenue. It is approximately 6.5km from the main venue. It will serve traffic approaching the city from the N1 (north) as well as the surrounding residential areas.
• The Showgrounds Park & Ride site is south of Bloemfontein CBD, to the east of Curie Avenue. It is approximately 3km from the main venue. It will serve traffic approaching the city from the N1 (south) and the south western residential areas of Bloemfontein.

Park n Walk Sites

In addition to the two Park & Ride sites provided by the city, the following sites which are in close proximity to the stadium have been identified as Park & Walk sites:

• Grey College & Eunice School situated on Jock Meiring Street, approximately 800m west from the main venue.
• Fontein Street Parcade is situated between Fontein Street and Selborne Avenue, in the Bloemfontein CBD, ±400m east of the main venue.

Existing Services

In addition to the event related transport services, visitors to the Mangaung can make use of other existing transport services outlined and listed below.

• Metropolitan Bus system

  The local bus service is operated by Interstate Bus Lines, which is a private operating company, mainly responsible for operating the existing commuter line between Bloemfontein and Thaba Nchu / Botshabelo. For further details on this services routes and schedules visit www.interstate.co.za.

• Metered Taxis

  The metered taxi service is expected to contribute to the provision of a service on routes that will not warrant the implementation of a dedicated shuttle service, or on routes where these services need to be complemented. The metered taxi mode of transport is proposed to serve the Airport to Stadium/Accommodation route, the rail to accommodation, feed accommodation origins to Park &Ride and Park & Walks, as well as maintaining normal service.

• Car Rental

  The private car hire companies operating at the Airport and the CBD will play a supporting function in the transportation of spectators. These services will be available on a first-come first-serve principle to all spectators.

Fan Park Area

The official FIFA Fan park will be located at Mangaung Outdoor Sports Centre, which is situated in the south-eastern section of Bloemfontein and, ±11km from the main venue.

The Fan Park will be served by means of either a direct service from the Free State Stadium, or alternatively by means of a service from Hoffman Square in the CBD area.

Public Viewing Areas

Mangaung has identified the following two Public Viewing Areas:

• Mabana Stadium in Thaba Nchu, which is situated ±70km east of Bloemfontein via the N8.
• Area outside Botshabelo Stadium in Botshabelo, which is situated ±60km east of Bloemfontein via the N8.
